What Is Plantable Seed Paper?
By Ankita Jain, founder of Purple & Pure · Updated 28 October 2026
Plantable seed paper is handmade paper with real seeds pressed inside. After you use it, you plant it in soil, and the paper breaks down while the seeds grow into herbs, flowers or vegetables. It replaces single-use paper items like cards, tags, notebooks and business cards with something that leaves no waste.
How Purple & Pure seed paper is made
- Material: made from residual cotton scraps from the textile industry, so no trees are cut.
- No bleach: no harmful bleaching chemicals are used, which is why the paper has a natural off-white colour.
- Handmade in India: each sheet is handmade by women from underprivileged communities in India, giving them a steady livelihood.
- Weight: about 250 gsm, thick enough for printing cards, labels and flyers.
- Fresh seeds: most products are made to order with fresh seeds.
What seeds are inside?
- Greeting cards: wildflowers, basil or mixed vegetables
- Seed pencils: basil, tomato, coriander, marigold, fenugreek or brinjal
- Plantable calendars: marigold, vegetables or herbs
How to plant seed paper in 3 steps
- Plant: tear the paper into small pieces and place them on a pot of moist soil.
- Cover: add a thin layer of soil on top and press gently.
- Water and wait: keep the soil moist and the pot in a bright spot. With regular watering, the seeds sprout and the paper breaks down into the soil.
For seed pencils and seed pens: when they are too short to use, push the seed end into the soil and follow the same steps.
